KING ARTHUR STORY

Uther, the High-King of Britain fell in love with  Lady Igraine, but she was already married to Gorlois, the Duke of Tintagel.
  • King Uther decided he must marry Igraine. So he took his army and fought with Gorlois. Gorlois was killed.
  • King Uther married Igraine and they had a son named Arthur
  • He was born at Tintagel Castle.
  • This was a very dangerous time and attacks by Saxons happened a lot.
  • So King Uther gave his baby son to his wizard, Merlin, for safety.
  • Merlin sent Arthur away to be raised in the countryside by Sir Ector.
  •  He grew up with his foster brother, Kay. He never knew who his real parents were.
  • When King Uther died, no-one knew he had a son. So there was lots of arguing about who should be High-King of Britain.
  • Suddenly a mysterious stone magically appeared in the churchyard of St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. Sticking out of it was a huge sword. There was a message on it. It said that whoever pulled the sword from the stone was the rightful High-King of Britain.
  • Lots of the local kings (or 'tyrants') tried to pull the sword out. It was magically stuck fast though and the arguing carried on.
  • Years later, Arthur had grown into a fifteen year old lad. It was time for his elder foster-brother, Kay, to go to his first tournament (where knights practiced fighting). So the family went to London.
  • Arthur got into trouble because he had forgotten Kay’s sword. So he went off to look for one.
  • He found the sword in the stone and pulled it out easily.
  • Arthur gave the sword to Kay. Kay noticed the message and everyone wanted to know who had pulled the sword from the stone.
  • At first, no-one believed that Arthur had done it. But he repeated what he had done. Everyone was amazed.
  • Arthur was crowned King by St. Dubricius.
  • However, 11 of the local kings would not agree to him being High-King. They did not want to have to do what a fifteen-year-old told them to. They started a rebellion (a war against the proper ruler).
  • Merlin the Wizard helped King Arthur to rule Britain. He took him to a magical lake. Merlin’s friend, the ‘Lady of the Lake’ lived there beneath the water. She gave Arthur a magic sword called ‘Excalibur’.
  • Excalibur was kept in a magic scabbard. If you used Excalibur in a fight, you would always defeat your opponent. If you had the scabbard, you would always be protected from being hurt yourself.
  • Arthur led a big army against the 11 rebel kings. There were many battles, but Arthur had Excalibur, so he won. The kings agreed that Arthur should be High-King.

  • Arthur set up his Royal palace at Camelot.
  • When Arthur was a bit older, he married a princess named Guinevere. She was the daughter of King Leodegrance of Cameliard. As a wedding present, her father gave them a huge round table.
  • All the knights in the country wanted to be soldiers for King Arthur. The bravest of them were allowed to sit at the round table. They were known as the ‘Knights of the Round Table’. Because it was round, the positions of all the seats were equal. No-one could say they were more important because they sat at the end.
  • The Saxons were still attacking the British.
  • Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table fought against the Saxons in many battles. They finally defeated them at the Battle of Mount Badon.
  • Everyone was happy and felt very safe again.
  • Arthur thought he was doing a better job than the Roman Emperor in Italy. He decided to take his army to Europe. After a lot of fighting, the Emperor agreed to give the western half of Europe to Arthur.
  • Back in Britain, the Knights of the Round Table had lots of adventures. Some rescued princesses. Some fought dragons or bad knights. Many of them went to look for a religious cup called the ‘Holy Grail’.
  • The best and bravest of the Knights of the Round Table was called Sir Lancelot. He came from Brittany (in France) and was King Arthur's friend.
  • He was also very handsome and Queen Guinevere fell in love with him.
  • The two would sneak away from the palace to spend time together. King Arthur had no idea what was going on.
  • King Arthur’s nephew was called Mordred (or Medrod). He was an evil man. He found out what Guinevere and Lancelot were doing and he told King Arthur.
  • Lancelot ran away, but Queen Guinevere was taken to court. The judges decided she should be burnt to death.
  • Lancelot rescued her and they escaped to Brittany.
  • Arthur took a big army across the English Channel to Brittany. He wanted to punish Lancelot and Guinevere.
  • King Arthur left Mordred in charge while he was away in Brittany.
  • As Arthur had no children, Mordred was going to inherit the kingdom when Arthur died; but he could not wait.
  • Mordred told everyone that King Arthur had been killed fighting in Brittany. People believed him and Mordred made himself High-King of Britain.
  • Luckily, Arthur heard about what was going on. He returned to Britain with his army.
  • Mordred had given away lots of money and so some people liked him. They helped him put together his own army and start a rebellion (a war against the proper ruler).
  • The armies of Arthur and Mordred fought at the Battle of Camlann. Unfortunately, Arthur did not have Excalibur’s scabbard with him. It had been stolen by his wicked sister, Morgan Le Fay.
  • The battle was so bad that only a few people were left alive at the end. Two of these were King Arthur and Mordred.
  • They fought each other in single combat. Arthur killed Mordred, but was very badly hurt himself.

  • Arthur knew he was going to die. He gave Excalibur to Sir Bedivere. He told him to return it to the magical lake.
  • Bedivere pretended to do what he was told; but he hid Excalibur under a bush instead.
  • Arthur asked Bedivere what happened when he threw the sword into the lake. Bedivere said that it sank.
  • Arthur knew he was lying and told him to go and do the job properly.
  • Bedivere threw the sword into the lake. He saw the hand of the ‘Lady of the Lake’ come out of the water to catch it.
  • Three Queens arrived in a boat and took Arthur away to the Isle of Avalon.
  • It is thought that he died there soon afterwards.

KING ARTHUR. 3RD SECTION.

 1. READ KING ARTHUR STORY AND CREATE A PICTURE ENCICLOPEDIA WITH ALL THE CHARACTERS IN THE STORY, aAND THE MOST IMPORTANT PLACES.
eX MERLIN     he is the wizard who...............

2. IN YOUR NOTEBOOK WRITE A SUMMARY OF THE STORY .

The legends of King Arthur belong to the oral tradition.
They were put in writing by Geoffrey of Monmouth in
1136. In the Middle Ages, French writers like Chrétien
de Troyes also wrote about them. In 1470, Sir Thomas
Malory wrote a long book in English called The Death of
Arthur.

Summary

King Arthur and his knights are Britain’s greatest
legendary figures.

Although the legend of king Arthur is developed in the middle age period (norman) it is the story of a British king who fights Anglosaxons

Chapter 1: With the help of Merlin’s magic, King Uther
marries the beautiful Igraine on condition that Uther gives
him their firstborn. When Arthur is born, Merlin hides
him. On Uther’s death, civil war breaks out. One day
young Arthur travels to London, with his step father, Sir
Ector, and Arthur pulls a sword out of a stone. The stone
has words on it: ONLY THE KING CAN TAKE THE
SWORD FROM THE STONE, so Arthur becomes the
next king.
Chapter 2: Arthur quickly gathers around him the
bravest and best knights in the kingdom and marries
Guinevere, the most beautiful woman in Britain. Merlin
makes a round table for the knights at Camelot, the most
important city in Britain.
Chapter 3: Arthur comes across Queen Annoure’s castle
on a journey. Annoure wants him to marry her. As Arthur
escapes, she orders Sir Pellinore to kill him. Unaware that
he is fighting Arthur, Pellinore wounds him lightly but
then realises who he is. Since Arthur’s sword breaks in the
fight, Merlin takes Arthur to the Lady of the Lake, who
hands Arthur a magic sword called Excalibur.
Chapter 4: Morgan le Fay hates Arthur and tricks him
and one of his knights into a fight in which neither knows
the other’s identity. This time Arthur is severely wounded
and goes to a nunnery to be healed. Morgan follows him,
steals his magic scabbard and throws it into a lake.
Chapter 5: Lady Vivien wants to be the greatest magician
in the world and tricks Merlin into getting into a cave he
cannot get out of. Legend says Merlin is still trapped in
this cave.
Chapter 6: When Sir Meligrance kidnaps Guinevere, Sir
Lancelot rescues her. Meligrance is forgiven by Guinevere
but he locks Lancelot into a room and tells Arthur that
Guinevere has run away with him because she loves him.
When Lancelot escapes, he kills Meligrance for being a
liar.
Chapter 7: Tristram gets poisoned in his fight against the
King of Ireland’s son and travels to Ireland to get cured.
Without knowing Tristram is his son’s murderer, the king
asks him to teach his daughter, Isolt, to play the harp.
Tristram and Isolt fall in love but Isolt has to marry King
Mark, Tristram’s uncle, and Tristram becomes a Knight of
the Round Table. When Sir Tristram learns Isolt has been
kidnapped, he fights Sir Palamides, her captor, and takes
her to King Mark who suspects Tristram and Isolt are
in love and kills Tristram. Isolt dies of sadness and King
Mark is killed by one of Arthur’s knights.
Chapter 8: An old man sits Galahad, Sir Lancelot’s son,
at the only vacant place on the Round Table, reserved for
the best knight. Once dubbed a knight, Galahad takes a
long journey in search of the Grail which, according to an
apparition, is in the country. As many knights accompany
him, the brotherhood of the Round Table is practically
dissolved. They finally find the Grail on a ship at sea
which takes them to a city. In the city, the old man makes
Galahad king and foretells the latter’s imminent death.
When the other knights return, Arthur can sense the end
of the Round Table is near.
Chapter 9: In Arthur’s absence, Sir Mordred attempts to
kidnap Guinevere. Arthur returns and one of Mordred’s
men kills Sir Gawain, Arthur’s knight. In Arthur’s sleep,
the dead Gawain advises him to wait for Sir Lancelot’s
help. The fight against Mordred’s men starts by accident.
As many knights die, an enraged Arthur kills Mordred and
gets a deadly wound. Arthur asks Sir Bedivere to throw
Excalibur into the lake. When Bedivere finally does so, the
Lady of the Lake takes it. Arthur’s last wish is to be taken
to the lake. A boat with five ladies in black is waiting for
him. Before leaving, Arthur promises to return whenever
his country needs him and asks Bedivere to tell his story.

GLOBAL CLASSROOMS. ALL INFORMATION TAKEN FROM THE WEEBLY OF IES ANGEL CORELLA. THANK YOU

MODERATED CAUCUS
This is a less formal debate in which delegates remain seated and the Chair calls on them one-by-one to speak for a short period. This allows for a freer exchange of opinions than would be possible in a formal debate using the Speakers’ List.  You should motion for a Moderated Caucus if your hear something in an opening speech that you would like to opportunity to debate or discuss more freely.
After going through the first few delegations on the Speakers’ List, the Chair will say something like this:
·         “Are there any outstanding points or motions on the floor? The Chair would look favorably upon a motion to move into 10-15 minutes of moderated caucus with a speaking time of 45 seconds.”

If you would like to make a motion to move into a moderated caucus, you will say:
·         “Honorable Chair, (Country Name) moves to suspend debate for the purpose of a moderated caucus for a total time of ____ minutes and a speaking time of _____ minutes.”

Remember that the total time is the total amount of time the moderated caucus will last and the speaking time is the amount of time each delegation will have to speak when called upon. A good amount of total time would be 20-25 minutes and a good speaking time would be 30 seconds, 45 seconds, or one minute.
After the motion has been made and there has been a second, the committee will vote. There must be a simple majority vote for the debate to move to a moderated caucus.
Raise your placard to speak during the moderated caucus. Stand in place and address the committee using good public speaking skills.  While the moderated caucus is going on, be sure to carefully take notes of everything you hear that interests you for future blocs and resolutions later on in the day.  Once the total time is up for the moderated caucus, the debate returns to the Speakers’ List.  Now any speeches given from the Speakers’ List will focus on the ideas and suggestions from the moderated caucus that just finished.
To return from the moderated caucus to the formal debate/Speakers’ List, the Chair will say:
·         “Thank you for sharing your thoughts and views. You offered some interesting views on the problem and possible solutions, such as _____, _______, _______. “
NOTE: This summary by the Chair is a great time for you to take some more notes on the important solutions or proposals presented by the other countries!

·         “The time for the moderated caucus has now expired. We will now return to the Speaker’s List. Your speeches should focus on the results of the moderated caucus and the ideas you just discussed. Delegation from _____, you have the floor.”

GLOBAL CLASSROOMS

If you have a point or would like to make a motion to move into a MODERATED CAUCUS or an UNMODERATE CAUCUS, you should say it at this time. Wait until the Chair asks for points or motions.
If there is a point or motion, proceed with it. If there isn’t, the Chair continue going down the Speakers’ List saying:
·         “Seeing no one, delegation from _______ you have the floor for one and half minutes.”
After every few speakers, the Chair will remind the delegates that they may add themselves to the Speakers’ List by saying something like this:

·         “Are there any delegates that would list to be added to the Speakers’ List at this time?”
